Pattinson: ‘Drinking is Normal’

Posted by Adam

Robert Pattinson doesn’t understand why Americans think it’s “strange” for young people to be seen in pubs.

The 22-year-old British actor – who shot to fame playing vampire Edward Cullen in the recent Twilight movie; a role he’ll reprise alongside Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in its sequel New Moon later this year – insists it is perfectly normal for people his age to enjoy the odd beer.

He says, “There isn’t really like a pub [culture] in L.A.

“It’s just a very different culture. I think people from L.A. don’t really understand how it’s such a normal thing to be in pubs from a very young age in London. people [in America] just think it’s so strange.

“Like drinking has such a stigma attached to it here. I’ve never really understood it. It seems so normal to me.”

Pattinson can soon be starring as Spanish painter Salvador Dali in the upcoming indie drama Little Ashes.

I live in California, but my entire family is Irish, Scotish, and British so I grew up with the same mentality that its completely normal to relax and have a couple drinks every night. In the UK, Ireland, and Scotland (and I’m sure it’s the same in most of Europe) pubs are pretty much like family hang out spots. It’s very normal to see family (including young children) and friends all gathered in a pub just hanging out and having a good time. Rob’s right, in America there is a huge stigma attached drinking and I think that’s why we see so many people who have drinking problems from such a young age. It’s like reverse psychology, if you tell someone that something is forbidden or taboo then they will almost always end up doing it because it’s like there’s some sort of mystery and excitement attatched to it. Like I said I grew up in a very European family where alcohol pretty much flowed free and I was never told I couldn’t drink. The only thing my parents ever told me was that it’s best in moderation. So as I grew up there was never any mystery or excitement that went along with drinking because I knew it wasn’t off limits. It was completely normal.

The USA just don’t understand our pub/drink culture in the UK/Europe. Go Rob, show them you can have a few social beers with out getting hammered …

Americans are pretty judgmental, I think that as a whole is what hurts us with the opinions of other around the world. and on the other hand My Husband and I are not big drinkers and has hurt us a little with the Europeans we have meet, they find it uncomfortable to be around people that prefer coffee to beer or wine.

Everything needs to be done in moderation of course, unless it’s illegal.

Americans get all upset over sex – they teach “no sex is the best protection”, and eventually, what does that lead to? Yeah, teenage pregnancies. Same with drinking. People make such a big flim-flam of it, that it becomes a taboo, and eventually young people try it to the extremes since it’s “forbidden” and then we read about drunk drivers, and several deaths in the paper. Lovely.

I spent my early twenty’s (I’m only 27 now)in Italy and loved the pubs so much more than the clubs. Its a more relaxing atmosphere and really it depends on your personality. Some people just don’t enjoy going dancing all night and get spit faced drunk. They just want to hang out a chill with friends. I totally understand.

I can completely agree that having too many things censored or made into a taboo can be bad. I live in america and think that the European take on sex and drinking is great. There wouldnt be such a big deal made here to see a breast on tv if it was there all the time and maybe there wouldn’t be so many drunk driving accidents if kids were shown how to understand what they were doing and how to respect it. Here it is the fun thing to drink before the legal age and get away with it.

  • Canadian Drinking

I live in Canada and there is much less of a stigma attached to the whole drinking thing. Its really cold up here too and nothing warms you up like a sip of alcohol (kidding… its really not that cold).
There is absolutely nothing wrong with going to a pub. Its basically like going to a restaurant that serves alcohol It is not about drink-until-I-pass-out kind of place.

Hopefully Mr. Pattinson likes Vancouver when he is in Canada and enjoys the pubs here.

Here is a website of downtown Vancouver pubs if anyone is interested.

I completely agree with Rob. I live in Canada, and even though our stigma isn’t as intense as America, there IS still a stigma there for us to deal with. Being able to just have a couple of drinks with some friends shouldn’t be such a big deal. And as for the difference between going to a pub or a club, just because someone goes to a club, doesn’t mean that they will be drinking at extreme amounts and become out of control. And as for going to pubs, there is something that is relaxing and fun about going to one with some friends and just having a good time and talking. It’s all about maturity and versatility. Enjoying the odd beer or “alcoholic beverage” is completely normal.

    Cheers!
