Vanessa is set to play the part of Rizzo in Fox’s rendition of the hit musical, and she has been hard at work in rehearsals for the airing this evening.
No doubt this will be a difficult performance as it’s certain she will be fighting some difficult emotions following the devastating news.
The 27 year old actress, singer paid an emotional tribute to her dad on Twitter, vowing to perform tonight “in his honor”.
She wrote: “I am so sad to say that last night my daddy, Greg passed away from stage 4 cancer. Thank you to everyone who kept him in your prayers.”
She went on to say, “Tonight, I do the show in his honor.”
The High School Musical star asked fans to send their prayers for her dad just last week. On Twitter she wrote: “Hey guys. My dad isn’t doing too well. Please say a prayer for him! It would mean a lot to me.”
The star revealed that her father was battling cancer last August, while on stage accepting an award at the 2015 Industry Dance Awards. She said at the time: “Last year, my boyfriend, Austin [Butler], lost his mom, Lori, to cancer, and my dad has just been recently diagnosed with stage four cancer. Let me tell you, I hate cancer. I hate cancer with every cell of my being.” We’re so sorry for your loss, Vanessa! We’re sure you’ll rock the Rizzo part anyway!
